They can help you if the car breaks down in the future.

Before dropping your car off for repairs, remove any valuables. If something is missing, it will be your fault if you do not take it out. Clear out your trunk, too.

Ask questions. You need to know exactly how much your repair will cost and exactly what the mechanic will be doing. Great companies will tell you all of this information upfront.

Your car should be washed regularly so that rust doesn't become a problem. All cars eventually get rusted, but the process can be delayed considerably by washing off any chemicals or salt immediately. A good wax can help you keep your paint job protected well.

Don't forget about wiper blades. If your windshield wipers aren't performing up to par, it may be time for new ones. Wiper blades should be replaced when they wear out, or at least once per year. This can be more often if your location receives a lot of rain.

Put reminders on your calendar that tell you when to have your oil changed. It is essential to have your oil changed so that your engine runs properly and and works at its peak performance. In the long run, omitting this important step could cost you thousands of dollars, and it could lead your vehicle to an early death.

When speaking with a mechanic, always ask questions. Ask about things other than just the cost of repairs. How long should it take to finish? What type of work is being performed on the car? How much will it cost you? What other questions do you have? Learning more about the issue is useful in case the problem arises again in the future and to show the mechanic you are informed.

Go over your owner's manual and dog ear the most useful pages. The auto repair shop people will ask you specific information about your car. By knowing the manual, you may actually find you can fix some issues yourself.

Ask about prices and labor rates before you give your keys to a mechanic. There are many unscrupulous mechanics who are not upfront about their costs and policies. Make sure that you know exactly how you are going to be billed. Shops also often give you estimated repair costs and times. Some minor repairs might be considered as an all day job by some manufacturers.

Check your drive axle boots often for leaks. These protect the axle joint. Look at this part by simply turning the wheels and seeing what is behind them. If the boots appear to be cracked, be sure and replace them as soon as possible before any leaks form.
